RE: Hardy Creek

WEF6 Responds:

I don’t really have much to add but concurrence. We need to know if we
actually have our name on the deed. We should be willing, if we’re
capable, to buy out anyone who needs out. I agree with Mom; the
easement is an absurd idea.

I adore Hardy Creek, but Erin is right about the possibility that
there may just be too many people owning it right now. If there was a
way to sell it for its true price, get our share, and then reinvest
the money in another parcel of land…well, I would say we should do
that. But I don’t think we can get out of Hardy Creek without selling
it for less then it’s worth, in which case, no beans. When it comes
time to do your will, Oh Lovely Parents, we should think very hard on
which family (Husband, Wife + Kids) should inherit. I don’t think all
of us should, just for sanity’s sake.

*

And Cousin Elisa’s response to me:

Hi Mark,

Right now the Hardy Creek property is still in your Mom and
Dad's name, unfortunately it was not deeded into their trust.
I’ve been trying to see if there is a way to transfer it to
you and John without the necessity of probate. I haven’t
really worked on if for awhile as I'm currently taking 15
units at SF State , two days of teaching and still trying
to do the law thing. I’ll be totally done June 9th and I’ll
be able devote all my time. Hope all is going well.
Talk to you later.

Elisa

Hardy Creek

I sent all WEFers an e-mail on the goings on at Hardy Creek. I think it’s probably better to have any discussion about it here so we can all see everything.

Tom Lewis is a second (?) cousin who’s put a lot of time and effort into the property over the years. He and Aunt Nancy (Berry) represent the side of the family that generally uses the Big House. Joe is one of the ten children of my Aunt Mary (my mom’s sister) He is from “our side” of the family who generally have chosen to use the smaller cabin. By “our side” I don’t mean to imply there’s any conflict (there isn’t). It’s just that our families in a lot of ways grew up together, and we don’t know the other side nearly as well. I think it’s important to understand that there are no bad guys in this, although emotions may get in the way occasionally. Anyway, here’s Tom’s letter again. I don’t have Aunt Nancy’s letter in this computer, but it has basically the same theme, without the touch of bitterness:

tom1.jpg

tom2.jpg

Here are Joe and my brother John’s messages:

Hi John,

Tom’s letter arrived today (attached). I was expecting bad, but Tom’s
negative emotions jumped off the page at me. He took some unnecessary shots
which don’t bother me because I think he is off base, nothing new.

I forwarded Tom and Nancy’s letters to my sibs. Both letters seem to
have a “fork u in the road” theme.

*

Joe

Thanks for forwarding it. Tom also sent a copy to me. As I said before, I have
no objections to having the Save the Redwoods League or anyone else taking a
look at the property or even having an official appraisal done, as long as they
realize there is no obligation incurred. I’m also thinking that Nancy and Tom
are way too optimistic about having anyone buy the property in a hurry. It’s not
as though the economy is that great out there or that the state has a bunch of
extra cash floating around And if they’re interested, it’s likely to take years
to close a deal. As for the trail, a payment for an easement is much more likely
than any straight purchase. I think, though, you had probably get in touch with
Uncle George and Elisa to see where they stand and what the legal options are.

Again, thanks for keeping me in the loop.

John W

------------------------

And below are our family’s comments so far. I’m not entirely comfortable posting e-mails, as there’s more of an expectation of privacy than on the blog. I’ve done some minor editing and paraphrased (in italics) some of the more colorful phrasing:

*

FromWEF4: Was he talking about us with all the “days are changing, people are around the world” stuff? Gee I hope not. Anyway, doesn’t the caretaker take care of the property for board? If that’s the case, I’m not sure I entirely understand Tom’s concerns. I understand there are getting to be a lot of people involved, but I’m still unsure about who is who. If someone can buy them out that would be awesome, otherwise perhaps there are just too many people on this property to make keeping it worthwhile.

Or what is this easement option that Uncle John is talking about? That might be better . . . btw, We probably need to clarify the ownership issues involved here.

Sorry, more questions than answers. Thanks for letting me know what is going on. What do the rest of you think?

*

From WEF3: I would sell whatever we have to and buy them out at the price they agreed to when they first bought the place, BUT adjusted for inflation and spread out over 10 years. Sounds like they are just desperate for money and relief from having to deal with the meetings and dues. I can understand not wanting to sell it for what - 7 thousand? What would the adjusted price be taking into account inflation? A 10 year payment schedule might not be so burdensome, especially if we can get Uncle John on board.

At the very least, this would be a very financially sound investment. There is no better investment than land, especially this piece of land.

I wish I could contribute more than just thoughts to this, but alas, I am also broke.

*

From WEF2: As to any easement for a trail, if the trail is on the property to the beach we just gave the beach away. Please make sure Elise comments on this. Also, I am against an easement unless it is very clear folks cannot stray from the path (right . . . ) or, again, we are opening up this property to the public and we can lose significant rights over time. (I see no reason to give anyone an easement — the money will be insignificant and we’re giving away a lot).

Didn’t see the whole trail of emails, so cannot make it all out. I agree with Nate about a buy out, but only if we enhance our voting position. This property will become a nightmare soon unless the owners can agree on what to do — and that means a majority vote somehow. However, if the price is right, I say we buy out whoever needs the cash.

Like Erin, I would be interested in seeing the deed and clarifying the ownership issue. If fact I’ve have been wondering about it for some time.

*

Me: I don’t think Tom was particularly talking about us, because there are several families that are no longer in the area, and I’m sure that’s part of reason he feels he’s gotten stuck holding the bag with all the responsibility.

I’ve contacted cousin Elisa (the daughter of my mom’s brother, so another member of “our side” of the family– She and her father, Uncle George, have been the attorneys dealing with Hardy Creek all these years) to get the documentation so we know how this is all owned and our part in it.

I think that if we can get a accurate appraisal of the property, it would be a good first step to working this out. Then we can figure out what everyone’s positions are, and what is possible.

I also think we should decide how much time and effort each of us personally may be willing to put into the management of the property, if it comes down to it. Tom is undoubtedly correct that there’s been a lot of standing around with hands in pockets, letting things ride. It may be that those willing to put some energy into this will drive the process, and we’re spread all over the world, except in California. So some personal commitment may be necessary. Hardy Creek is a pretty big deal to me, but that may be nothing more than nostalgia. We need to know what everybody else thinks.

Turkey

So, we’re going to Turkey? What are the exact plans reguarding this? One of my best friends from DC (Barbra, you guys may have met her, she did City Year with me) just moved to Baghdad. As we are both on this side of the world now my closest girlfriends from DC have proposed we all take a European vacation together in the beginning of Sept (Sept 2 - 9 or something like that.) So, I proposed they come to the house in Turkey. This is, of course, under the assumption that our family vacation ends the 27th of August? As such, I would like to know everyone’s dates for Turkey and also when a ride to the house can best be arranged as I will be bringing all of my worldly possessions. I want to see everyone but I don’t really want to go as early as the 10th as I should probably still be working on my thesis then and want to finish it before I leave.

Calling WEF5!!

We’ve been trying to contact your unit to arrange for you to come out our way when you get your time off.  I’ve been using the e-mail message function on the unit’s website– Once to the Exec and once to the 1st Sgt, but no response.

If you could give me a phone number that I can use to reach someone out there it would be helpful.  Unless we don’t need to contact anyone and you’ve worked it out yourself.  Whatever you think best, just let me know.

August, September Retrospectives

August and September were pretty pathetic. Of course, many of us saw one another over our various vacations, so it’s to be expected.

The good news: It appears I managed to guilt/bully at least one of you into posting when you wouldn’t otherwise have done so. Wonderful! My little pep talks here must not have been in vain. Keep up the good work! And the rest of you– Remember, we’re keeping score!

On that note, While none of us did very well, I’d like to particularly negatively commend WEF2, WEF3.0, and WEF7, and encourage them to step up to the plate, come out swinging, keep you eye on the ball, and knock a few posts out of the park! …Say, is it October already? Are there some baseball games going on or something?

August started out great with three posts on the First, three more on the Second, one on the Third, four on the Fourth, one on the Sixth and two on the Seventh, for 14 posts in the first week!

Unfortunately, the next one didn’t appear until the 21st, which sorta killed that month.

In any case, here are the box scores:

NOTES FROM THE BLOG NAZI:

13.jpg

Like Mistress Greta’s dobermanns, Adolf and Spot, my two pet peeves continue to snap at my backside!

Well, I am not afraid to name names! The guilty must consider themselves in the Virtual Cooler for an extended period–And NO ball gloves!

During the past two months some of you continued to insist on posting in the “Unfiled” category:

WEF2; WEF3 (Four times!); WEF4; and WEF6 (Twice!)

Unless you people can explain to me why your posts are about “Unfiled”, You shall receive no mercy from me, nor from my lovely assistants!

And nomenclature conventions continue to be too often grossly ignored!! Are you listening, WEF2 (Thrice), WEF3, WEF4 (Four instances, including a TITLE!!), and WEF6 (Twice)?

And on the first of this very month, there occurred a COMPLETE MELTDOWN involving several comments! Isn’t that right…. WEF3?? It seems you will indeed be left to the tender mercies of my two lovely assistants, Brunhilde and Muffy. They love their work so much they have volunteered to whip you into shape even though the verdammit ersatz buttons on their blouses have disintegrated, and, due to wartime rationing, have not been replaced. Meanwhile, it appears Mistress Greta has lost her entire uniform, yet also remains on duty. Take a bow, Ladies!

June, July Retrospectives

Big changes have been afoot here at WExForce the past two months– What at earlier times threatened to become the WEF6-WEF1 Blog now looks more like the WEF3-WEF4 Blog! Others have also increased participation, contributing to the health of the Blog.

Here are the numbers:

JULY TOTALS: 28 Posts, 63 posts

In June, we almost reached a new benchmark with everybody making at least one post during the month, but, alas, we had nothing from…former high scorer WEF6! Shocking! (although she contributed many comments over the two months) I can’t say much because in July I only had one post myself.

But WEF3 and WEF 4 stepped into the breech to more than make up for our dismal performances.

The big surprise, however was when WEF5 decided to jump in all the way, with lengthy and thoughtful posts and comments. Who could have predicted this? Certainly none of his former teachers, I suspect! WEF5, We Salute You!

WEF7 and WEF2 also made modest improvements, which we hope will continue. We’d like to hear more from WEF3.0, but we understand that she’s now making contributions to the family of a totally different nature.

Here are some additional interesting stats:

Grand Totals :

Feb: 25/25

Mar: 32/64

Apr: 18/35

May: 9/13

Jun: 34/57

Jul: 28/63

You can see that despite the coma we all went into during part of April and all of May, WExForce is going strong. With our vacation coming up this month, I expect to see lower numbers since we’ll actually see each other. However, WEF6 is starting out strong with reports of her Turkish adventures.

Several of you are slipping up regarding our peculiar institution of nomenclature. Who are these “Nate” and “Morgan” persons, and why are they cluttering up this blog?

And why is “Unfiled” still one of our more popular categories? Perhaps you should all go back and make the proper corrections. Or perhaps what you need is a good drowning in our dungeon water tank wearing nothing but sexy underwear, eh??

RE: New Naming Scheme

As a true conservative, naturally I hate it, because it’s a change.

But, assuming we aren’t taking this too seriously, and in the spirit of comity and cooperation, I’ll play.

I think 1) it’s too confusing, and 2) it’s a bad idea to change a name (in this case two names) if we can avoid it.

It’s going to be a bit difficult to keep straight pre-marriage WEF6 and post-marriage WEF6-1, who has off-loaded WEF6-3 and WEF6-4, then shot WEF6-2 for not being present at the birth of WEF6-4, reverted back to WEF6, and, after paying her debt to society, has married WEF6-5, thereby becoming WEF6-1 again, and has birthed WEF6-6– not to mention her son WEF6-4 who by this time has married WEF6-4-2 and metamorphosed into WEF 6-4-1 like a tadpole turning into a bullfrog.

Besides, by the logic of the proposed system, WEF3 would actually be the former WEF1-3 who is now WEF1-3-1. In fact, here is the new line-up:

WEF1 = WEF1 (we have to start SOMEWHERE)

WEF2 = WEF1-2

WEF3 = WEF1-3, er… 1-3-1

WEF3.5 = WEF 1-3-2

WEF4 = WEF1-4

WEF5 = …well, you get the picture.

Now I realize consistency is the hob-goblin of little minds, and my solution will still not be perfectly consistent in any case. That’s because our original concept was highly nuclear (Wildermuth) family-centric. Nevertheless, I think I have a better system that will be clearer, keep the spawn straight, and only involve one minor name-change (sorry WEF3.5!)

WEF1 through WEF7 remain unchanged.

WEF3.5 changes to WEF3.0– To all you feminists out there, WEF3 and WEF3.0 now have the same VALUE (get it , Gloria Steinem?), just expressed differently.

The incoming round becomes WEF3.1, followed by WEF3.2., etc.

WEF3.2’s spouse would be WEF3.2.0, with r-rats WEF3.2.1, WEF3.2.2 …

This way, except for the core group who have been hopelessly compromised , all others can be easily identified by birth position (WEF3.2.1 is WEF3’s second child’s first child).

Not that I expect the blog to go on for the next 20 years, but at least we are approaching logical consistency and clarity.

As for the replacement for WEF6’s murdered spouse- While not very romantic (but in the true Wildermuth spirit), Spouse #2 would be WEF6.0 (squared) — we should have some time before we need it to figure out how to position the “2″ as an exponent behind the “0″ in the WoodPress text.

It will be highly gratifying as you respond with your comments on this obviously superior system.

New Naming Scheme

Check out my new name - WEF3-1.   WEF3.5 has now been renamed WEF3-2.  Our future child will be WEF3-3.  If that child gets married, they will be WEF3-3-1, and their spouse will be WEF3-3-2.  Their first child, my first grandchild, would be WEF3-3-3.

Now, this system isn’t perfect, but what do you think?

April, May Retrospectives

The last two months have not been good ones for the WEF Blog. I realize that with a lot of people traveling and seeing each other anyway there was less of a need for posting. Still, it was pretty pathetic. Naturally I completely exonerate myself and WEF2 since we seldom had access to a computer while we were on the road; as for the rest of you…

Anyway, here are the sad numbers:

——————————–April—————————- May

WEF1:>>>> Posts-4; Comments-6————Posts-4; Comments-3

WEF2:>>>> Posts-0; Comments-0————Posts-1; Comments-1

WEF3:>>>> Posts-2; Comments-5————Posts-3; Comments-3

WEF3.5:>>> Posts-2; Comments-3————Posts-0; Comments-0

WEF4:>>>> Posts-1; Comments-4————Posts-0; Comments-0

WEF5:>>>> Posts–0; Comments-0———–Posts-0; Comments-0

WEF6:>>>> Posts-10; Comments-17——– Posts-1; Comments-6

WEF7:>>>> Posts-0; Comments-0 ————Posts-0; Comments-0

Totals:>> Posts:18; Comments-35 ——–Posts-9; Comments-13

Past Performance:

March: Posts-32 Comments-64

February: Posts-25 Comments-25

So April was about half of March, and May was about half of April. Not a good trend.

June is starting off better, but with only a few contributors. Some of you haven’t posted anything in May or (so far) in June! Where are you, WEFs 3.5, 4, and 7?

We especially miss the stuff from WEF4, whose posts are always so entertaining.

On the other hand, we finally heard from WEF5, with both a post and a comment!

WARNING: Serious Message Ahead

peter-pan.jpg

Recently I referred to this object as, “A Monument to Our Children.” At the time I wondered if I was being too subtle. Of course, it’s all about deciding to never grow up.

Lately several stories of WEF financial irresponsibility have come to light. If fact, it recently cost us more than $500 to cover one of you.  I understand it is easy these days to take the easy path and spend money you don’t have or blow off some bills, but it will ALWAYS catch up with you. Mummy and Daddy are not here to pay for it anytime you decide that staying within your budget is just no fun.  Jobs are really handy things to have, and it’s even better to get one BEFORE you spend the money.

Also, WEF2 hasn’t gotten from some of you the information she needs to provide you with your FREE TICKET to Turkey in August, despite telling you that we needed to make arrangements early to keep costs reasonable. Please contact her by phone and/or e-mail within the next day or so to see if she needs anything you haven’t yet given her and to reconfirm your plans for the Summer.

There’s a reason they call it Never-Never Land.

WEF1 Out.

Great job as we’ve had an almost 100% increase in activity. With WEF4 and WEF3 jumping in an such a big way, there’s a much better distribution than last month.

It’s tailed off quite a bit over the past week, though. I’ve got an excuse, how about the rest of you?
Notes from the Blog Nazi:

What’s with the “unfiled” posts? Fully one quarter of the posts didn’t have the proper category.

New Stuff on Right

You’ll notice that the right-hand side of our page now contains some additions and modifications.  First, if you are logged into WExForce, you’ll see the links for “Write a New Post”, “Add a Link”, and “Dashboard”.  If you click on “Add a Link”, you’ll be taken to a screen that lets you add your favorite links.  Just make sure to click on your WEF# category on the right, just as you normally would for a post.  Your link will then show up in the Blogroll, under your name.  I’ve added three links, though more are to come.  To make it all easier, there is a link at the bottom of the Add a Link page that you can bookmark, and it allows you to add any page you are currently viewing simply by clicking on that bookmark.

Ah, technology.

Also - the categories have been sorted and ordered.  Peace and War are now under Politics.  Rules committee is now under WEF internal affairs.  Lets keep our categories nice and neat!  :)

Posting Comments (or not)

Back in my “February Retrospective” post I asked everybody to properly use comments when responding to posts rather than using a new post. Since then I have learned my lesson. Not only did WEF6 give me a reasonable rationale for this practice (Nobody reads comments), but it soon became apparent that she was right. Otherwise how could there possibly be a post entitled “Dad’s Lost Post on Politics”? (Who is this “Dad”?)

I am ready to admit defeat on this. Otherwise the only ones who will ever read my and WEF6’s comments are each other (Not that there’s anything wrong with that). There are many blogs that do it that way, such as NRO’s “The Corner”. All I ask is that when responding to a prior post, we use the title, “RE:” followed by the title of the post you’re responding to. That way we won’t be any more confused than usual. Of course the anarchists among us (You know who you are!) will ignore this minor request on principle, but what can you do?

I’ll still use comments on occasion for very short, well, comments. So keep on the lookout for them. Anything at all substantive, though, will appear as a Post.  See my Last Hurrah in a series of comments on my post “Poor Writing, with a Little Poor Thinking Thrown in”

WEF1, signing off!

WEF5

Called me today. This was our conversation:

WEF4: Hello.

WEF5: Hello, it’s Karl.

WEF4: My brother Karl?

WEF5: Do you know any other Karls?

WEF4: O Brother, Where art thou? The peoples on the blog are concerned!

WEF5: Fifteen minutes from the house.

WEF4: Who’s house, our house?!?

WEF5: Yes.

Cliff Notes: WEF5 is home. For nine days. YAY!!!!

February Retrospective

We’ve just finished out first month here at WExForce, so I think it’s a good time to review how things are going.  Remember that I said I would be hounding all WEFers to blog as much as possible.  Well, here goes.

Here are the February Stats:

WEF1:    posts–6    comments–9   total–15

WEF2:    posts–2    comments–0   total–2

WEF3:    posts–3    comments–1   total–4

WEF3.5: posts–3    comments–0   total–3

WEF4:    posts–0    comments–0   total–0

WEF5:    posts–0    comments–0   total–0

WEF6:    posts–10  comments–15  total–25

WEF7:    posts–1    comments–0    total–1

———————————————————

WEF6 takes the title of #1 February blogger with fully half the total entries. Congratulations!  Maybe she’ll get that pony after all!

Special award for outstanding initiative and posting beyond the call of duty goes to WEF3.5! (And no, WEF3, you cannot add those to your own total)

Other than that, the numbers speak for themselves.  It’s clear some of us have to do a better job, and you know who you are.  WEF5 may have an excuse, since we don’t know if he’s even aware the blog exists.  But as for others…

I’ve said that I was afraid that this would turn into the WEF1/WEF6 Blog (Not that there’s anything wrong with that).  Currently 65% of posts and 96% of comments are from WEF1 or WEF6.

More notes from the Blog Nazi:

–As I mentioned before, I don’t know why, but it disturbs me to see uncategorized  posts.  I believe you can edit your previous posts to put them in the correct category.  If you do this, I will, for some reason, feel better.

–Several posts made should have more properly been entered as a comment to a previous post. Naturally we don’t want to single anyone out, as that might cause embarrassment.  Please look over your own  posts, examine your conscience, and see if some of them should have been comments.  Resolve to improve in this matter in the future, and I promise you’ll feel better about yourself in the long run.

Wildermuth Creed

WEF3.5 and I spoke for a while about this, and we came up with a new form of the Wildermuth creed.  The first line of the various version of the creed all stated that we follow Wildermuth standards and Wildermuth standards alone.  But what are the Wildermuth standards, I say?  We must have standards, explicit standards, otherwise it makes no sense!  What better place to put the standards, than within the very creed itself???

We are:
Insane
Loving
Dangerous
Extreme
Raucous
Magninimous  (Angela didn’t like this one, but I love it)
Unstoppable
Tyrannical
Humbler

Obviously, these words are perfect (or even great), but I like the idea of just using one word to spell out the actual Wildermuth Standards!

Missing Person Report

Does anyone out there know how to contact WEF5? I understand he’s currently at 29 Palms in California, but I’m not sure when he’s going back to Camp Lejune. Anyway, does he have an e-mail? If anyone hears from him please have him contact us by phone or on WEF2’s e-mail. Any information would be greatly appreciated, as we want to keep him in the loop.

Besides, he owes us money.

And FYI, those rumors you may have heard about him leaving the Marines to star in Disney’s new live-action version of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” are probably false.

RIP

As you all know (I think) Grampa Cullen died yesterday.

For several years his health has been bad.  I always thought he would be the first of the grandparents to go.  In fact he was the last.  I understand he died peacefully, which is a blessing.  A good guy who lived a long and fruitful life.  It’s impossible to avoid sadness at times like these, but at 98 it was probably time to go, and I’m sure he’s happier now .
